Gopher head coach Bob Motzko

I have a lot of respect for coach Motzko, understand why he left us. The question is can he and will he do anything for the Gopher hockey program that Don Lucia didn't. I think that discussion has to start with noting they aren't getting a 50 year old Bob Motzko they are getting the 57 year old version. They can talk ll about him coming back, but he has no history with that program at all, he was an assistant coach for a couple years, really good years but a couple years. To do for that program what he needs to he needs to get the kids that weren't planning on being Gophers when they were 10 years old, and no matter how talented he needs to reject some of the kids who were born Gophers. As nuts as it seems Kevin Fitgerald is a far better recruit then Casey Mittlestadt. Bob Motzko's last 6 years comes with one player who has spent one full season on an NHL roster that being zero goal scoring 27 year old Nick Jensen. You can win with the right NHL prospects and you can win with no real NHL prospects Bob is gonna have to find the balance, and reject some really talented players. If it was 50 year old Bob Motzko I'd bet on it, I'm not sure 57 year old Bob Motzko will have the drive and ability to pull it off to the level needed. A great program at Minnesota I believe is good for Husky hockey in a lot of ways.

Maybe this will be a blessing in disguise for our program in the end. I think how it unfolded is the hard thing to take. He obviously was speaking the Minnesota before our season was complete and at a crucial time. Then to skip out on the coaches show Monday night. Finish what you start. a delay of 3-4 days would have not hindered that transition at all.

He will now be known as "Back Door Bob."

Odd quotes from Motzko last night that he can't lay into his team for lack of effort because that only works a couple times a year. Maybe the truth is in St Cloud you only needed to do it a few times a year, and maybe he once did it an extra time and the response was lacking because sometimes the right coaching tactic doesn't get the result it typically gets. Motzko's attitude along with some quotes I've seen from Husky players suggesting Larson asks for more even if things are going well suggests maybe Motzko isn't up for the challenge. I would challenge anyone to tell me one thing Bob Motzko has done right since taking the job.

He created all kinds of drama by taking the job and stealing recruits along with not trying to make friends. He's reaping what he's sown. He has always relied almost 100% on the players and captains to be the on-ice leaders, and it bit him in the butt here several times too. It is just one of his faults that he refuses to recognize.

On a related note. A bunch of us have been tempted to go to the Motzko show in Minneapolis one of these weeks.

It appears to be a wasted season for Bob and the Gophers. I know he has a few good players coming in next year including Bryce Brodzinski, but talent has never been the issue. How does he get these kids to play like Bob Motzko or St Cloud players and less like the kids who's ego grows the day they step on campus. Outside of just not recruiting as many Minnesotans which probably wouldn't work I have a hard time thinking Bob has the answers. I expected him to do some things to let you know he was in charge but it's the same old Gophers. The check still cashes, what does he care.
