2016-17 SCSU Men's Hockey Season
Re: 2016-17 SCSU Men's Hockey Season
I usually sit in the upper student section a few rows up from the crowd. For most game's it's about 20 non students and 20 students. Lower sections are basically full but that's a couple hundred student seats every game going unused.

In fairness to SCSU, attendance concerns are a sport-wide thing for a number of reasons; nearly every school/team is having problems.
The only school/team NOT having issues is NoDak, but I'm quite sure the apocalypse could happen and The Ralph would still be sold-out lol

It can be misleading to judge attendance from watching online or on TV. The camera shots usually show no more than the lower 10 rows of seats, and even with a 75% of capacity crowd, those low rows often are left open because they aren't the best for seeing the live action in a game. I've been to five home games this season. For almost all games there are open seats, but it's not like the place is empty.

Average attendance numbers at the National Hockey Center going back to 2008-09 season (source USCHO).
16-17: 4333
15-16: 4200
14-15: 4398
13-14: 4501
12-13: 4413
11-12: 4939
10-11: 5935
09-10: 5670
08-09: 5988
So you can see the drop after the 2010-11 season for some reason, but has been pretty steady the last five seasons. I always remember capacity crowds in the early 2000's. Yup, 2001-02 average attendance was 5738 with a great team on the ice.

Re: 2016-17 SCSU Men's Hockey Season
Looks like about the time we moved from the WCHA to the NCHC. Swap Mankato, Bemidji and Wisconsin with Miami, W Mich and Omaha on the schedule and you get quite a difference. Plus a couple extra games here and there with Minnesota, Mich Tech, Alaska(different styles- Wisco, Bemidji and Alaska) Ten plus team conference vs Eight teams, a little more interesting to follow.
2010-11 WCHA went from 10 to 12 teams. Added Bemidji and Omaha. 2013-14 was the move to the NCHC.
Add in smart phones, home games on HDTV, technology ect and high ticket prices (especially with the recession and finally started addressing)...
Conference games this weekend are North Dakota at W Michigan, Denver at Miami and UMD at CC.

Re: 2016-17 SCSU Men's Hockey Season
TV's the clear factor in attendance, Husky productions does such a great job and in the St Cloud area every home game is available no matter what. I'm sure a lot of people that used to go all the time now only go to 2 or 3 games. I feel cheated on NCHCTV knowing all the quality broadcast are games I should be attending, maybe if they had a deal where NCHCTV was free with a season ticket that would help although again it's mostly locals who don't need NCHCTV to watch the Huskies and might not care as much about watching other teams as people like us.

This is very true as well, I've been to every home game since 2013-14 and the crowds are always solid, easily 80+% every game aside from like UAH and even then it was a great crowd.

It's good to see that attendance is picking back up after it was randomly so low last year; what was that about anyway, arguably the best team we've ever iced and the attendance bottomed out?

I wouldn't be shocked if success of the Wild is a bigger factor then it would seem. Also even though I barley notice it at this point beer sells could explain the 3% increase. Weather wise they probably lucked out this year too. We had the snow storm the night of the Saturday North Dakota game, but the tickets had already been sold by that point so it didn't negatively effect attendance #'s.

Re: 2016-17 SCSU Men's Hockey Season
Huskies up to 11 in the pairwise. They have the rare lead over a Providence team they trail in RPI and didn't beat head to head so you can't really expect that to last unless we can continue to win and pass them in RPI. Still being at 11 with a bunch of splits the last month plus (calling the 2 Miami series a split) is probably as high as we could have expected. Screwing around with game results and giving them 2 more splits they stay at 11, and that would probably put them in a position to play Western Michigan or North Dakota on the road where 1-2 probably wouldn't drop them below 13. Of course other teams results could change that. Huskies are in a good spot though, win next Friday and chances are they're in.

Looks like they were all tight games last night. Denver and W Mich with empty net goals. Denver's game winner at 13:56 of the third playing 4 on 4. UMD's game winner at 15:16 of the third on PP. W Mich's game winner at 13:08 of the third even strength.

Re: 2016-17 SCSU Men's Hockey Season
Looks like the chances of us playing North Dakota in the first round are way higher then I'd like especially considering they don't help us in the pairwise nearly as much as they did earlier in the year. Of course if Omaha wins at least 3 against North Dakota and Denver they should jump way up the rankings. Either way win On Friday against Denver and we shouldn't have much to worry about.
