I know the schedule made it tough to play a goalie who hadn't seen action in a month or two or three but the situation seemed really weird early in Smith's run. If I'm Driscoll and my competition is Smith I'm thinking this is a good shot to win a job if I work hard in the summer.

This was the most confusing thing to me. I thought both goalies were improving on about an even keel. Clearly, Motzko thought otherwise, and he likes to 'ride the hot hand'.

Dean Blais Steps Down as Coach at Omaha

Technically, he had a year left on his contract, so this belongs in early departures. ;)

Sounds like Borgen, Peterson, Schuldt, and Eyissimont are staying. Assuming the freshman all stay, what is the roster going to look like next year? Who is coming in for sure? If Widman comes back do any D come in?

Does anybody want Widman to come back? He does nothing for me. I would rather give a couple of the other guys ice time that sat this year than him.

I agree with Boomer Smith was the best option for the team this season, but I just don't think he has a high ceiling. I hope I am wrong and he becomes an all American. Our defense will be older and better next year. Let's hope the goaltending is as well.

Widman does nothing but add a body back there and a relatively useless one at that, losing Nevalinen should open a spot for Kuster to step in, Widman wont be missed on the ice if hes granted his extra season.

Ilvonen has proven to be no better and we have no clue what Kuster will be. Widman had a rough year but his first two seasons he was just fine. Depth is not a bad thing.

I agree. I think Widman just had an off year. Likely due to his focus on academics (and rightfully so, imo). Ilvonen won't crack the roster again, unfortunately. I think he has utility, but not at D. The play he grew up with in Finland doesn't seem to have transferred will here, but he still has skill that could be utilized up front. I thought Kuster had a good showing last year, and he'll prove the better with more maturity.

SC Times, missed last Friday's chat...
Husky Hockey Chat with Mick Hatten

I like this question...

Comment From Pugsly from PA
It seems Penn State has success more quickly than St Cloud when it started its team, how do you explain that?

$88-102 million from the Pegula's, YOU THINK? We've had to beg borrow and pray the state legislature to get us a fraction of that. How can someone from PA be that far buried under a rock?

HB National Hockey Center...

State Investment
$9.5 million (1987)
Built in 1989 - played 2 years Div 1 at the MAC (municipal athletic complex) - Torrey arena seats 2,000
Renovation -
$6.5 million (2008)
$8 million coming from private donors

We also entered into the WCHA, not a Big 10 that is collectively on down years.
