Awesome to see Russell and Lizotte get re-signed!
Kind of sad Hendricks career is over now, but he played in the NHL for years and had a great career

This kind of sets him up as another potential Husky alum head coach for when Larsen inevitably moves on. He'll have to move to a lead role or get behind the bench somewhere first, but this starts him on the track.hockeypuck wrote:fox9.com
Matt Hendricks retires, takes on player development role with Wild
Here are some top candidates...
Scott Meyer - 43 (Former Head Coach - Mn Magicians-NAHL)
Matt Hendricks - 38 (Asst. Manager Player Development - Minnesota Wild)
Bobby Goepfert - 36 (Asst. Coach - Cedar Rapids)
Marty Mjelleli - 36 (Asst. Coach - St. Olaf)
Garrett Raboin - 34 (Asst. Coach - UMTC)
Nick Oliver - 28 (Asst. Coach - SCSU)
Cory Thorson - 28 (Asst. Coach - St. John's)
For reference, Brett Larsen is 46 so I didn't include any candidates older than that. Raboin and Oliver would be the frontrunners at the moment.

Well I guess the good news is you are assuming Larson has success with us.The_Exiled_One wrote:This kind of sets him up as another potential Husky alum head coach for when Larsen inevitably moves on. The bitter pessimist that I am, I predict he'll squeak into the NCAA tournament next season largely on the backs of Motzko's recruits, probably lose in the first round again, then leave for an under-performing "big money" school to cash paychecks until Sandelin is finally lured away from UMD.Husky1 wrote:Well I guess the good news is you are assuming Larson has success with us.
--OR--
He'll fail horribly in the next couple of years and voluntarily go back to work as an assistant for Sandelin. It has to be voluntary because SCSU is in no position to buy anybody out.
The future of SCSU hockey is hazy and dark, IMHO. I hope Larsen can prove me wrong, but it's hard to go anywhere but down from the last two years.

If these are indeed the two most plausible scenarios then hiring him in the first place would've been a huge mistake. I'm not going to pretend I know recruiting better than you (or anyone really, for that matter) but I feel pretty good about his pipeline as far as the blueline is concerned. Yes the picture at forward is a lot murkier (to say the least) but I think UMD has proven several times over that you can do just fine with a less than stellar forward group. All things being equal I would've preferred Motzko stayed but then again he never really got us very far when it mattered. Picking from the Sandelin coaching tree was IMO the best decision we could've made, especially considering Gronborg was always a pipe dream and his ability to recruit in the US anyway was unknown at best.The_Exiled_One wrote:The bitter pessimist that I am, I predict he'll squeak into the NCAA tournament next season largely on the backs of Motzko's recruits, probably lose in the first round again, then leave for an under-performing "big money" school to cash paychecks until Sandelin is finally lured away from UMD.Husky1 wrote:Well I guess the good news is you are assuming Larson has success with us.

All that said assuming Larson leaves I'm on the Raboin bandwagon. Everyone else is a distant second.

The last two years have been beyond amazing and brought a lot of pride and titles to SCSU, but there's no reason to think we're headed for the dumpster now
Bob and Larsen definitely have different strategies and recruiting styles, for sure, so the pipeline/rosters might look a little weird for awhile, but it's not like we've lost the advantages we've had (HBNHC, NCHC, tons of success, NHLers, etc.)
So as long as Larsen sticks around for awhile I definitely feel that we'll stay at the top, albeit by playing a more defensive style which actually might lead to more NCAA success
And I've no doubt that Rabs was always the heir-apparent here, things just got shuffled by events, so once he's ready and Larsen is done we'll be entering the Raboin era for sure
