BREAKING: SCS Athletics Director Heather Weems has announced the contract of women’s head hockey coach Jeff Giesen will not be renewed.

Coach Giesen is a nice guy, but this is for the best. There's no reason why the women's team should match the success of the men's team. I'm not sure if they'll give more weight to hiring a female for the position, but there are a handful of male alumni who are coaching at a comparable level. DelCastillo, Meyer, Weasler, Mejelleli, and Ammerman come to mind.

Raboin, of course, but I doubt he'd want to leave the track he's on now. At some point, he'll likely attempt to head up a USHL team, then return to SCSU to take over for Bob when he's ready to call it quits.

And finally, it should go without saying, Jim Fetter will probably get a good look as well.

Wasn't DelCastillo the one that has had a number of things against him from female athletes? If that's so, there's no way SCSU would hire him back to take over coaching a female sport.

Yes this is for the best but there is a BIG reason why the women's team will not be as successful and that is a massive lack of talent at the women's level. Until the strength of women's hockey overall gets better, we will not be competing with MN, UMD, UW & UND.

Why couldn't we compete with UMD or UND? What do they offer (besides history) that SCSU doesn't offer? You might be right that the talent pool is thin, but I don't think the school or the facilities were holding us back from getting top recruits... just the coach and the reputation. The new coach has the ability to change the reputation.

Not sure. I guess I was unaware of any of that. Obviously, that kind of stuff would pretty much disqualify him.

The history is the reason. Unless we get a guy like Idalski at UND, why would players come here when wekve never shown we can win? They are going to go where they can win, and that's not here. We've had a women's program how long, and how many winning seasons do we have? How many wins do we have against the top programs? A MASSIVE culture change would have to happen and that includes admin and fan support for the program and I don't see that happening.

Huzzah! +1

Seriously, the rink renovations paired with a decent name can make a difference. I just hope they can at least be competitive.

Just heard/read that they were looking to get the positions filled by the end of May. Not surprising since they really need to get him/her in there to show who's in charge and settle any current or potential recruits minds.

In other news, Skye Kelly will not be returning to SCSU next season. From what I heard she's not transferring to any hockey school nor any school in the US (all this as of about two weeks ago give or take a few days). To clear things up now, this was not a grade thing or a being cut thing, she decided she didn't want to do hockey anymore nor stay at SCSU as just a regular student.

I wish her good luck in her future.

From what I hear, resume's will be gone over in the next few weeks, phone interviews of those qualifiers next, and on-campus visits/interviews after that. So the end of May sounds like a very good estimate of when a new coach will be named.

SCSU will have 6 on campus to interview for women's coaching opening

Have to agree with Heather Weems on this, they received a strong set of applicants for this job. I think the only one I didn't remember anything about was Koch. Not sure who I'd recommend though I must admit that the combination of being a Husky Hockey Fan and growing up a Badger fan in most sports besides hockey I'm reluctant to back a head coach that I know I heckled when they played for the U.

I could easily see Harrington or Rudd take the job though. Wonder what the team thinks about it.

Wow that is an impressive list and pretty interesting.

Maybe we can land a couple of them, coach and asst's.

I'm surprised Rud would apply. I thought he was looking at a Men's position a couple years ago. I think it was Mich Tech. He was HC for the Green Bay Gamblers and then asst at CC. He was also in the top 10 for the new CC position until Mike Haviland was announced. In this article he says by May 9th he hadn't been contacted by Haviland and he was looking at all of his career options...

He must really like St. Cloud or maybe he isn't happy at CC.

Or both.

He seemed to react fairly well to the unofficial assistant coaches' table at the Coach's Shows when he was still an Assistant here, not that it has much to do with things... other than many of those sitting at that table go to the Women's games as well, which he may or may not know. I would have to say on my limited knowledge it's probably down to him and Harrington though. Perhaps Potter too. I'd think if a recruit was looking at the name/background for a coach they'd look at Harrington first then Potter if they're thinking well known names in Women's hockey.

I don't envy the people who need to make this decision, but I look forward to the results.

I do have to say that Fetter, despite already being an assistant here might have the lowest chance of the group. Partly because there's less name recognition to him, not that it should really matter but they are trying to persuade girls to look at something other than the U, Duluth, and now North Dakota (not to mention the big school out east). Having a new coach with a name the girls might recognize would likely help a lot. Winning more games again will help even more but we still need the right players to get there.

Have I missed something about John Harrington? When was he connected with women's or girl's hockey?

On the "other" board--USCHO--someone commented that it looked like Fetter was the obvious choice. He does have coaching experience in Canadian National girl's teams. His recruiting experience is good, but I would wonder if any of the new Huskies were recruited by him--and if that is the case, I haven't seen many blue chippers.

The name that sticks out for me is Jenny Potter. Fiercely competitive, a winner at UMD, UofM, national teams and Olympic teams (Gold medal winner). Certainly has name recognition and respect in the world of hockey.

I agree with the above posters--a very impressive list of candidates. I trust Heather Weems will make the right choice.

Harrington was a volunteer assistant here last year for the women's team. Also, Koch withdrew today.
