SCSU Women's 2013-2014 Season

Unread postby hockeypuck » 25 Sep 2013, 06:58

Last year the women didn't play at home till the first week of November.

This year they have two exhibition games at home in September.

They open the season tonight against the Japanese Women's olympic team at 7:07pm.

Then they play Saturday against U of British Columbia at 7:07pm after the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center's Grand Re-Opening (4 pm for the public). There's also a football game at 6pm.

Anyone know what the new 24 hour SCSU High Definition sports channel will be on Charter starting in October? Looking forward to it.

Wishing the women good luck this year!

The women won in a shootout yesterday. It was pretty cool seeing the Japanese names. :D

I was stuck replacing a ball joint on my car. I'm still not finished, actually. Sounded like a really good game.

We made it around the end of the second period.

We have been there several times during the day but it seems to even more impressive at night with the lighting etc. My son made a comment as we got out of the car that he was impressed.

There was a good crowd of students and it was fun with the Japanese fans. I agree the player names were fun and interesting. It was a great show of sportsmanship, camaraderie and goodwill during the salute and pictures at the end of the game.

Hamner has a nice slapshot. Mott, Gilbert, Olson, Burghardt and Redford all had chances to win it in the third/OT.

I believe the new Husky Sports Channel will be test-broadcasting the womens game on October 4th vs Quinnipiac. As of now, the channel has not been announced.

Looking at the composite scores against like opponents. Japan (played Minn, Wisc and UMD) and British Columbia (played Minn and Mankato).
http://www.wcha.com/women/schedule/index.php

Scouting the early women's WCHA...
It looks like Minnesota and UMD are going to be very tough this year. Wisconsin a little bit below them and we should be about even with Mankato. Early on it looks like we need to stay out of the box(checking and roughing). Mankato seems to be having the same issues- a lot of penalties.

This is interesting... North Dakota has an almost all European top line. (LW Tapani-Finnish National Team, C Jakobsen- Dannish National Team, RW Dalen- Norwegian National Team, LD Eisenschmid - German National Team) They also have a LW and LD on the second line. ( Karvinen - Finnish National Team and Fallman - Swedish National Team)

I'm not sure. The game against British Columbia was broadcast. It maybe just be online streaming. I'm disappointed that the women's streaming isn't free.

I'd like to believe it is Charter's fault. They only semi like men's SCSU hockey but hate the idea of more than that even if it's free to them. Never liked charter much in the first place. Only have them because they're the only cable company in town and for SCSU hockey.

I really feel bad for our goaltending. There is absolutely no ability to finish on this team. It is possible that Spataro leads this team in scoring and I don't think she is any better than a 3rd liner on any other team in this league. Maybe Mott does it but she is so streaky, she reminds me of Swanson for the men. The D is pretty solid, especially with Hanmer and Kelly but man are we going to be hard pressed to score goals (again.)
While the goal scoring has been improved the last 3 years (31, 44, 57) I'm not sure they can improve on last year. It's a team that works hard, but the offensive talent just is not there. It is also very discouraging that in the 2nd game of the year, against a team having to travel from Connecticut, we looked totally gassed in the 3rd on Saturday as QU swarmed all over us to tie it and then put it away.
Unless I'm wrong, the best scoring player Giesen has actually recruited (meaning I don't think he recruited Roberts, Hogan, F. Nelson, or Pezon who were freshmen on his first team) has been Alex Nelson who finished with 28 career goals (Mott will pass that as she entered the year with 24)
So he hasn't been able to recruit a player who has even AVERAGED double digits in goals for a season in their career. That is flat out unacceptable. This team doesn't have the talent to compete and to me it is clear that Giesen (75-151-30 .352 entering this year) can't recruit any either. The guy has to go.
